Workshop overview: what to expect

The Getting Unstuck workshop — also called Breakthrough/Restart — begins with a brief kickoff to align everyone on the purpose and process. The team then dives into various structured exercises, such as Sailboat and 5 Whys analysis, to identify both challenges and underlying issues. Midway, participants reframe problems with How Might We (HMW) questions to guide solution-focused thinking. A Reverse Brainstorm, Reverse Reverse Brainstorm, and Rose, Bud, Thorn evaluation follow, where Bizarro ideas are turned into actionable strategies. By the end, the team has a well-defined path forward, with prioritized solutions and a plan to tackle immediate obstacles.

Case study

When a leading consumer health and wellness company approached us with an idea for a chatbot, we encouraged them to broaden their scope to maximize the value of their investment. Our design team framed up a two-day workshop to explore diverse paths for product and service innovation. The agenda kicked off with lightning talks to establish context and collective learning, followed by a SWOT analysis to identify strengths and opportunities. Anchored by the Getting Unstuck sequence and a service ecology map, the workshop concluded with 10 Types of Innovation to expand the range of creative possibilities for the client.

Held in-person, the workshop led the team through a structured journey to uncover core challenges, align on key priorities, and spark creative problem-solving. Using targeted exercises like root cause analysis and ideation sessions, we helped the team assess current processes, identify areas for improvement, and clarify strategic opportunities. This approach enabled participants to collaboratively refine their vision, prioritize high-impact goals, and generate actionable ideas to drive innovation across their product ecosystem.

At the end of the two days, we recommended an approach organized into four parallel streams — each one designed to balance strategic vision, team alignment, and sustainability by focusing on specific areas to ensure short-, mid-, and long-term outcomes through tactical actions. The intention of this framework is to help the company systematically explore opportunities within the connected health and wellness space and lay the groundwork for future solutions.
